Spark Your Knowledge With Our Lighting Glossary
There is a wide range of important lighting industry terms you should know to help you choose the right world-class LED lighting equipment for your business:
What Is a Light Beam Angle?
A light beam angle shows how light is emitted from the source to help you determine which type of lighting system you need for your application. A light-emitting diode (LED) system typically comes in a wide range of angles, from four to 60 degrees. Other LED lamps are designed with light beam angles up to 120 degrees.
What Is Solid-State Lighting?
Solid-state lighting (SSL) is a technology that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a source of light instead of electrical filaments, plasma, or gas.
What Is Color Rendering Index?
Color Rendering Index (CRI) is a scale that measures how a lighting system reveals an object’s colors in contrast to a natural light source. The scale ranges from zero to 100, with a zero rating meaning poor and 100 meaning excellent, and is dependent on how accurately the system can create a source resembling natural light. Most LED lighting systems produce a score of about 80 to 100 on the scale, resulting in brightening environments using a more natural, accurate light output.
What Are White LED Lights?
LED lighting systems don’t directly create a white color appearance. However, you can use two LED lighting technologies to emit white light. The first technology uses a blue LED and phosphor coating to transform blue light into white light. White LED lights can also be produced by combining red, blue, and green LEDs to create white light.
What Is Correlated Color Temperature?
Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) defines a white LED lighting system’s color appearance. CCT uses Kelvins to define the appearance in white LED lighting systems, defining a warm light at around 2700K, neutral white at about 4000K, and cool white at about 5000K or more.
What Are Lumens?
Lumens, or light outputs, measure the total amount of light visible to the human eye from a lamp or light source. The higher the lumen rating, the brighter the light appears.
What Is Direct Current?
Direct Current (DC) is used to power most LED strips on the market. A transformer or low-voltage battery is typically used to step-down Alternating Current (AC) voltage to a suitable level that powers LED strips. Most LED strips normally use 12V or 24V DC.
What Are Remote Lighting Controls?
Remote lighting controls allow you to maintain and manage new and existing lighting fixtures through a single wireless hub.
What Is Full-Spectrum Lighting?
Full-spectrum lighting provides an excellent source of light for any indoor application using full-spectrum bulbs with pitch-perfect natural lighting, color temperature tuning, integrated RGBA color flooding, and beam tuning.
What Is Adjustable Temperature Lighting?
Adjustable temperature lighting allows you to control a light source’s color temperature output, changing the color rendering in real-time. With adjustable temperature lighting technology, you can tune the color temperature to make your fixtures have a warm white or cool white color.
What Are RGBA LED Lights?
RGBA LED lighting systems use red, green, and blue lights to create more than 16 million light hues.
